Govardhan holds a special place in the hearts of devotees as the sacred hill that Lord Shri Krishna lifted on the little finger of his left hand to protect the residents of Braj from the wrath of Lord Indra. This divine episode, known as the “Govardhan Leela,” is a cherished narrative in Hindu mythology.
According to the story, the residents of Braj used to perform a grand worship ceremony dedicated to Lord Indra, the rain god. However, young Krishna, being the Supreme Lord, suggested that they should instead worship Govardhan Hill, which provides them with abundant resources. He emphasized the importance of the hill and its role in sustaining their lives.
Despite opposition from some, the residents, including gopas and gopis, followed Krishna’s guidance and performed a massive puja on Govardhan Hill. In a display of his divine power, Krishna expanded himself into a colossal form and accepted all the offerings made to the hill. This act of devotion infuriated Lord Indra, who, in his arrogance, retaliated by sending torrential rains and thunderstorms to punish the inhabitants of Braj.
To protect the Brajwasis from the calamity, Lord Krishna lifted Govardhan Hill with the little finger of his left hand and held it like an umbrella for seven days and nights. The entire Braj region found refuge beneath the hill, safe from the wrath of Indra’s storms. Recognizing Krishna’s supremacy and divine play, Lord Indra eventually surrendered, seeking forgiveness.
This episode symbolizes the importance of devotion and the protection granted to those who surrender to the Supreme Lord. Govardhan Hill, known as Shri Giriraj Ji, became a symbol of faith and a site of immense reverence for devotees. Pilgrims visit Govardhan to circumambulate the hill, a practice known as “Govardhan Parikrama,” seeking blessings and spiritual purification.
Shri Krishna’s eternal abode, Goloka Vrindavan, is beyond the material realm, yet he incarnated in various divine forms to serve Shri Radha-Krishna and engage in loving pastimes in the earthly Vrindavan Dham. In this regard, Govardhan Hill is considered one of the essential manifestations where Krishna, in his earthly avatar, performed numerous divine activities.
In the earthly Braj, Shri Krishna has descended in various enchanting groves, caves, and pure ponds, collaborating with diverse materials to serve the divine couple, Shri Radha-Krishna. Although distinct from the essence of Krishna, these revered Haridasvaryas, or topmost devotees, have been recognized as integral to the service of the Supreme Lord.
The Gopis, in their profound love and devotion, addressed Govardhan as Haridasvarya, signifying the highest among Hari’s servants. The sacred hill became a focal point of worship, embodying the inseparable bond between the devotees and their beloved Lord.
