Bhandiravan

Bhandiravan, one of the twelve principal forests of Braj, is a sacred place associated with various enchanting pastimes of Lord Krishna. Located in the heart of Braj, Bhandiravan holds special significance as a site where diverse and sweet leelas (divine pastimes) of Shri Krishna unfold.

Among the many enchanting spots within Bhandiravan, some notable locations include Bhandiravat (the sacred site where Brahma performed the divine marriage of Shri Radha and Krishna), Venukup (a well that Krishna created using his flute to free himself from the sin of killing Vatsasura, who had taken the form of a calf), Vanshivat (associated with the grand Raas Leela), the battlefield of the wrestling match, Shridama’s temple, Shyam-Talaiya (a pond created by Krishna for quenching the thirst of the gopis using his flute), Chaheri village (where Krishna would relax with his friends under the shade of trees), and Agiyara village.

The name “Bhandiravan” is derived from its significance as a place where all aspects of transcendental knowledge, opulence, and sweet, enchanting pastimes of Madhurya (divine love) manifest completely. Each location within Bhandiravan holds a unique charm and is associated with specific leelas of Lord Krishna, making it a treasure trove of divine experiences for devotees.

Bhandiravat is the site where Lord Brahma, the creator, performed the divine wedding of Shri Radha and Krishna, symbolizing the eternal union of the divine couple. Venukup, the well-created by Krishna’s divine flute, represents the playful and loving nature of the Supreme Lord. Vanshivat is renowned for the grand Raas Leela, where Lord Krishna multiplied himself to dance with each gopi individually.

The Shridama temple commemorates the friendship and pastimes of Krishna with his dear friend Shridama. Shyam-Talaiya, the pond created by Krishna’s flute, exemplifies his divine ability to fulfil the desires of the gopis. Chaheri village and Agiyara village are reminders of the simple yet profound moments when Krishna would interact with his friends and engage in playful activities.
